Dear Reader
The year 2021 was not easy for many businesses in Basel-Stadt. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, combined with logistical bottlenecks and challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers and Switzerland's unresolved relationship with the EU, have hampered entrepreneurial development. Nevertheless, where possible, the canton has been firmly committed to businesses and the location. This was particularly important in the sectors heavily affected by the pandemic. The fact that flexibility and resilience on the part of the companies – coupled with this stated commitment – are worthwhile is shown by the overall extremely positive development of Basel-Stadt as a business location, as well as the considerable number of companies relocating from Switzerland and abroad. In this 2021 annual report, the Economic Development Unit at the Office of Economy and Labour (AWA) shows for the first time how it has contributed to this success.
My thanks go to all employees for their continued significant commitment and our many partner organisations in the canton and region. Together we are committed to ensuring that companies in Basel-Stadt and the region can continue to contribute to positive economic, social and ecological development in the future.
